Faith Based Counseling

If faith based counseling has a role in your life, I believe that it is important to incorporate this into our counseling sessions. I am a therapist who understands, respects, and values your faith perspective.

I spent over 20 years working as a college pastor. I am also a pastor’s kid and a missionary kid and held many different roles in various churches over the years.

I strongly believe in a spiritual principle which states that when the old mixes with or comes into contact with the new, there will be conflict and / or destruction.

I believe many of the issues that we face in life are because old issues that are coming in conflict with the new. These old issues may include things like old thought patterns, ideas about who you are, what you think about yourself, how you interpreted experiences in your life and more. Looking at your old beliefs, or narratives, that you internalized is an important part of the work we would do in counseling that is faith based. Then, we will move towards understanding how the old beliefs were developed, how they are attempting to interact with the new, and look for the ways that the old and new are causing destruction. We will do all of these things while making space for the new.

Making way for new beliefs and ideas

It is natural to attempt to hang onto our old beliefs and ideas. We have lived with them for a very long time. In fact, they served as the framework we used to make sense of the world. It can be very scary and uncomfortable to ask new questions about our faith, ourselves, and the world. But it is so essential to do even if it’s hard.

The new things that are happening in our lives can be beautiful. They have the opportunity to teach us new things about ourselves, our lives, our faith, our relationships, and more. But, it isn’t easy. There is almost always pain and suffering that is a part of it.

  • I won’t give you trite answers or spiritual platitudes. I’m not going to tell you that you need to pray or believe more. I have been hurt by people trying to give trite answers to pain that I was experiencing. I won’t do that to you.

  • You will not be judged when you work with me. Often, church members or leaders face a very real worry that they will be judged, seen differently, or even be asked to leave the church if they seek counsel from another spiritual leader, especially their pastor. Sadly, this happens more frequently than you might think.

  • I have 20+ years of experience in helping people see how their faith beliefs impact their daily living.

  • You will face no judgement in the things you talk about.
